There is currently no evidence to support the idea that daith piercings are an effective migraine treatment - image courtesy of APSIn recent times, ‘Daith Piercings’ have become popular among migraine sufferers, in an attempt to ease their symptoms.

What are daith piercings?

Daith piercings are when the cartilage in the ear is pierced. This is thought to be particularly helpful for migraine sufferers who find that acupuncture is helpful with their symptoms. The piercing may act as a long-term acupuncture replacement, providing ongoing effects.

Anecdotally, there have been reports of people having fewer migraines and decreased intensity of migraine after they have had their daith piercing. However, this has yet to be shown in any research so the potential efficacy of this treatment modality is not understood. So at present, there is no evidence to suggest daith piercings are an effective treatment for headaches or migraines. It is also important, for anyone who is considering daith piercing as a treatment for their migraines, to consider the potential risks associated with this style of treatment.

What are the risks of daith piercings?

There are risks involved with any type of body piercing, all associated with foreign objects being introduced to the body. These include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Pain
  • Scarring or Keloids
  • Nerve damage
  • Infection

If you feel that daith piercings may be a viable option for you, it is important that you consult a qualified auriculotherapy practitioner or a licensed acupuncturist prior to getting any piercing done.
